The Delhi Government has approved the expansion of the Capital’s Metro network by clearing the remaining three corridors of Phase IV of the Delhi Metro Rail Transit System (MRTS). The decision follows the release of the Delhi Government’s share of funds, marking a major step towards strengthening public transport infrastructure in the city.
Under the plan, a new 47.225-km Metro network will be developed at an estimated cost of Rs 14,630.80 crore, of which Rs 3,386.18 crore will be borne by the Delhi Government. The project is expected to be completed within four years and is aimed at improving connectivity, reducing traffic congestion and helping control pollution levels in the capital.
Three Phase IV corridors
The first corridor will run from Lajpat Nagar to Saket G Block, covering 8.385 km with eight elevated stations. The second corridor, from Inderlok to Indraprastha, will be 12.377-km-long and will include 10 stations, one elevated and nine underground. These two corridors have been placed under a combined financial framework with a total project cost of Rs 8,399.81 crore. Of this, the Delhi Government’s share will be Rs 1,987.86 crore.
The third and longest corridor will connect Rithala to Kundli, extending Metro services to Haryana. This 26.463-km corridor will have 21 stations and an estimated cost of Rs 6,230.99 crore. Of this, Rs 1,398.32 crore will be contributed by the Delhi Government, with Rs 5,685.22 crore allocated for works in Delhi and Rs 545.77 crore for Haryana.
Wider connectivity
The new corridors will improve access across several parts of Delhi. The Lajpat Nagar-Saket G Block line will serve areas such as Lajpat Nagar, Andrews Ganj, Greater Kailash-1, Chirag Delhi, Pushp Bhawan, Saket District Centre and Pushp Vihar.
The Inderlok-Indraprastha corridor will connect Inderlok, Dayabasti, Sarai Rohilla, Ajmal Khan Park, Jhandewalan, Nabi Karim, New Delhi Railway Station, Delhi Gate and the Delhi Secretariat-IG Stadium area.
The Rithala-Kundli corridor will pass through multiple sectors of Rohini, Bawana Industrial Area, Narela and adjoining regions before reaching Kundli and Nathupur in Haryana.
Work underway
According to officials, the tendering process for the three corridors is already underway and preliminary work has begun on some stretches. Once completed, the corridors are expected to significantly reduce road traffic, save commuting time and encourage greater use of public transport across north, central and south Delhi, as well as the Delhi-NCR region.
